About Fitness In The Community

Fitness in the community aims to make fitness and exercise accessible to adults who don't take regular exercise but would like to.

Many of us acknowledge that keeping fit enhances general good health. However when we start to think how to actively improve personal health, taking the next step of doing something about it, can be daunting.

There are some superb gyms and leisure facilities in Monmouthshire, all have qualified fitness instructors who can assist and help to motivate clients to their personal fitness goals.

Fitness in the Community is person focused and can be an alternative or complimentary to some gym workouts.

There are many people who would love to get fitter, yet lack the confidence to progress to the next step in starting or resuming exercise There are a number of reasons for low confidence. Examples may include, personal health concerns or uncertainty about how fit and able we really feel. Often we have a very negative opinion of physical abilities and feel very self conscious about exercising in front of others.

Having observed that for some, the prospect of attending a gym or leisure centre can be a genuinely scary experience and, it struck me that there are so many people who want to get fitter but just daren't. I considered that people may be happier to try something less intimidating and local to them – hence taking fitness out on the road or into the Community, and that's how Fitness In The Community was conceived.

Essentially it is about enhancing and improving better health in the locality where people live and using some of the wonderful village halls that are designed to be used by the people who live near to them.

In a nut shell – It's about having a go at getting fitter and feeling a bit more in control of how healthy we can become.

Personal information

I was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire I'm married and have 3 daughters. We've lived in Chepstow since 2001.

I worked in NHS from 1979 to 2010. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety and opportunities that working in the NHS offers. I like to keep fit and well and enjoy participating in the group exercise classes at St Pierre. I also instruct the Aquarobics classes there occasionally.

In 2010 at the age of 50 - I took a leap of faith. I decided to leave nursing and train to be a fitness instructor whilst still having both the energy and capability! I enrolled on the fitness instructor training course with Fitness Wales and qualified in 2012.
